CRP test: what C-reactive protein tells you about inflammation
C-reactive protein, or CRP, is made by the liver and rises within hours of inflammation or infection anywhere in the body. It is a sensitive but non-specific marker: a high level tells you something is inflamed, but not exactly what or where. Doctors use it to detect inflammation, gauge how severe it is, and track whether treatment is working.

When a CRP test helps
- Fever or a suspected infection
- Unexplained pain, swelling, or redness
- Monitoring a known inflammatory condition
- Recovery after surgery or injury
- Tracking response to treatment
- Unexplained, persistent tiredness
What a raised CRP means
A high CRP points to active inflammation or infection, but it cannot say where. Your doctor reads it alongside your symptoms and other tests, then watches it fall as the problem settles. A normal CRP makes significant active inflammation less likely, though it does not rule out every condition.
CRP vs hs-CRP
Standard CRP is used for infection and inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) measures very low levels and is used differently, as part of assessing long-term cardiovascular risk. They are reported on different scales, so it matters which one was ordered; your doctor will advise which is relevant for you.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal CRP level?
Many labs consider a standard CRP below about 5-6 mg/L normal, but the exact cut-off is printed on your report. A raised value signals inflammation and should be interpreted with your symptoms by a doctor.
Does a high CRP always mean infection?
No. CRP rises with infection but also with injury, surgery, and many inflammatory conditions. It flags that something is inflamed; the cause is worked out with other tests.
Do I need to fast for a CRP test?
No. A standard CRP test does not need fasting and can be given at any time.
