Calcium blood test: what low or high calcium means
Calcium does far more than build bones: it helps your nerves fire, your muscles contract, your heart beat, and your blood clot. Your body keeps it in a tight range, so both low and high levels matter. A calcium test is often read together with vitamin D, because vitamin D controls how much calcium you absorb.

What low and high calcium can mean
Low calcium often traces back to vitamin D deficiency, but can also involve the parathyroid glands or the kidneys. High calcium is less common and may point to overactive parathyroid glands or other conditions. To find the cause, a doctor frequently adds vitamin D, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone tests.
The normal range
Total blood calcium is typically around 8.5-10.5 mg/dL, though the exact range is printed on your report. Your albumin level affects the reading, so a 'corrected calcium' is sometimes calculated. As always, interpret the number with a doctor rather than on its own.
