Amylase test: what high amylase means for your pancreas
Amylase is a digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates. It is made mainly by the pancreas and the salivary glands, and the blood level rises when the pancreas is inflamed. Doctors use an amylase test mainly to investigate abdominal pain and suspected pancreatitis, usually alongside a related enzyme called lipase.

What a high amylase means
A raised amylase most often points to inflammation of the pancreas, but salivary gland problems and a few other conditions can also lift it. Because it is not entirely specific, doctors read it together with your symptoms and frequently with lipase, which is more specific to the pancreas.

Amylase on its own is not a diagnosis. Doctors typically combine it with lipase, imaging such as an ultrasound or CT scan, and a clinical assessment. Severe or persistent abdominal pain needs prompt medical care rather than testing at home first.
